Here is a hard to find Baum book: “Babes in Birdland” (A Fairy Tale) by Wizard of Oz author L Frank Baum. Copyright 1911 by Reilly & Britton, first edition, second printing under this title (ca 1917) with L. Frank Baum credited on the cover, rather than the earlier Laura Bancroft pseudonym. Eight lovely color plates by Maginel Wright Enright, Frank Lloyd Wright’s sister. Elaborate ad for the Christmas Stocking Series in the back, for which Baum wrote an introduction. Spine credits Bancroft, not Baum, so 2nd binding state.
Book is in very good condition. The exterior is quite nice, with a clean pastedown, nice spine with gilt writing still legible, and mottled paper on rear cover as called for in the Books Collector’s Guide to Baum for this binding type. Spine credits Bancroft, not Baum, so 2nd binding state. Inside, the binding is tight and the pages have age toning and occasional soiling, with some foxing and a couple tiny tears at the edge of the color plates. Still quite attractive overall. The front endpaper has prior owner’s name and a note that the book was “won in running race at SS picnic, 1922”. A hard to find Baum title with all eight color plates present.
