In 1916 Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum started a new book series under the pseudonym Edith Van Dyne.”Van Dyne” was popular as author of the Aunt Jane’s Nieces series books. Baum wrote several books in this new series before he died, starting with Mary Louise. In the original dust jacket! This is the fourth in the series written by Baum–Mary Louise and the Liberty Girls. After Baum’s death, Emma Sampson continued writing Mary Louise series as Edith Van Dyne, continuing with Josie O’Gorman books, still with Van Dyne attribution. Copyright 1918 by Reilly & Britton, this is a ca. 1919 Reilly & Lee printing with the first R&L dust jacket per Bibliographia Baumiana– with the flying birds and the last book listed on the jacket flap is Mary Louise Adopts a Soldier, the title from 1919. Later jackets utilized a new graphic design.

Book in near very good condition, well bound with clean pages except a little staining on edges of text block and endpapers, old bookseller’s notations on front endpaper in pencil, age toning. Jacket is fair to good, with some loss to “Mary”, top of spine and joints. Flaps in good shape. Scarce in jacket.
