Sale: Probable WW Denslow Trade Card Baker & Hayes ~1883 Flower Border (Roses)

Trade Card Garland stoves W W Denslow Baker & Hayes

Here is an original trade card that I believe is by Oz illustrator W W Denslow, advertising “Garland Stoves”. The card is marked with the Baker & Hayes B&H lithographer’s mark. Denslow provided art for other Baker & Hayes cards with this mark, ca 1883 (Greene & Hearn, p. 14). (Also see my article in the Spring 2015 Baum Bugle for more info on Denslow’s trade cards.) The card bears an elaborate floral border that is consistent with Denslow’s early work, as he was experienced in horticultural renderings. In the background is a nautical scene.

Card in very good condition, with some discoloration on back. One of a set of 4; I do have one other in the set listed separately.

W W DENSLOW Choice Roller Skating Trade Card Baker & Hayes Victorian Tradecards

W W Denslow roller skating trade card Victorian 1880s Original

Here is your choice of 2 Victorian trade cards most likely illustrated by Wizard of Oz artist W W Denslow. These are two comic cards showing ice skaters, one “Clear the Track” and the other “Breakers Behind”. Both designs were printed by lithographers Baker & Hayes, with whom Denslow did other work (see Spring 2015 Baum Bugle for more info). Den didn’t sign his cards for Baker and Hayes, but the characters and lettering are in his style of the period. The Clear the Track card is printed with the overlapping B&H mark.  In Tow is marked “442” but the same image has been identified with the B&H mark as well as just “H”, possibly for Hayes. There are 4 cards in this series, all wicked hard to find. Price is for one card, increase cart quantity for more than one.

In good condition with light wear especially on back, see photos.

Beggar Student Theater Trade Card W W Denslow Original Oz Illustrator

Your choice of six unusual early trade cards illustrated by Wizard of Oz book illustrator W W Denslow from the comic stageplay The Beggar Student. Very early and charming examples of Denslow’s work with his “W*D” signature marked lightly in red. Three also are a new-to-me variants without the play name at the bottom that advertise Peerless Coffee on the back. This gig by Denslow is mentioned in the Bibliography on W W Denslow published in the Autumn 1992 Baum Bugle, though there it’s erroneously called The Beggar Prince. These particular cards show characters Symon (The Beggar Student), Lieu. Poppenburg (small tear), Gen Ollendori, Countess Pamatica, Laura and Jailer.
