Here is a beautiful early copy of “Il Mago di Oz”, an Italian Wizard of Oz novelization of the MGM movie by Maria Rosaria Berardi. Published by Societa Apostolato Stampa (S.A.S), Torino, ca 1948, 143 pages. For more information, see the Hungry Tiger Tales blog at http://hungrytigerpress.blogspot.com/2011/06/bellissimo.html. Also see this interesting (if somewhat confusing) translated history of Italian Oz books published by S.A.S. https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.umbertocantone.it%2Fil-mago-di-oz-cineromanzo-illustrato-di-maria-rosaria-berardi-tratto-dal-film-the-wizard-of-oz-1939-di-victor-fleming%2F&edit-text=&act=url . They date it this book at 1949.
The softbound book has Dorothy (Judy Garland) shrinking from the Wicked Witch (Margaret Hamilton) on the color cover, and a color frontispiece of Judy. Even better, there are thirty additional inserted B&W photographic plates with scenes from the film! One of the most elaborate of the Wizard of Oz book translations.
This copy is in very good condition with moderate edge wear, including a little splitting to paper at top and bottom of spine. Inside is quite nice with the original flaps intact, pages and plates with light discoloration, but not the foxing that is often present in this edition. Plates are in nice shape, and I saw no writing or tears. Another copy sold for $350 at the Bloomsbury auction in 2008. A nice, unusual addition for the Oz collector and a definite must for fans of the MGM Oz movie!
