Here is a Roycroft limited edition book called Essays of Elia by Charles Lamb–with an interesting heraldic cover design created by Wizard of Oz illustrator W W Denslow. His seahorse is visible in the corner of the design stamped on the suede leather cover. In addition, Elia’s interior was designed by Denslow, who created the stunning scroll initials for the chapter headings–each a little work of art (see photos). His orb and seahorse Roycroft device is on the title page. One of an edition of 970, “signed” by Roycroft founder Elbert Hubbard.
Exterior of the book is in very good condition, with a few small scuffs. Inside, the hinges are cracked and unfortunately, the text block is mostly separated from the cover. Some wear to the fun, original silk endpapers. Pages are in excellent condition, with a few small chips to rough-cut page edges. One of the harder Roycroft works by Denslow to find in good condition.
